There are two kinds of space movie and pretending otherwise leads to a lot of bad arguments. One kind is trying to show you what it would actually be like: the silence, the delay on the radio, the way a small mistake compounds over three days. The other kind is using space as the largest available stage for a story about something else entirely.
Both are legitimate. But if you sit down to a film expecting one and get the other, you will spend two hours annoyed. So this ranking gives every film two scores: how good it is, which determines the order, and how accurate it is, which determines whether it is the right film for your mood.

The Discovery has a rotating centrifuge to produce gravity, filmed practically in a 38-foot rotating set. Docking takes time and requires matching rotation. The trip to Jupiter takes months and the crew sleeps through most of it because that is what you would actually do.
It is also the film that established the visual language everyone else uses. Every slow docking sequence set to classical music, every calm-voiced ship computer, every white curved corridor descends from here.
The honest warning: this is a demanding 149 minutes with long dialogue-free passages and a final act that abandons narrative entirely. It is a film to submit to rather than enjoy, and the payoff is real.
Watch it if: you want the most technically rigorous and most ambitious space film ever made, and you have the patience.
Apollo 13 (1995)

Accuracy: high. Ron Howard shot the zero-gravity sequences in NASA's KC-135 reduced gravity aircraft, in roughly 25-second bursts, across 612 parabolic flights. Nothing is faked with wires. The mission control procedures are drawn from transcripts. The carbon dioxide scrubber sequence happened almost exactly as depicted.
What makes it the second best film here rather than a documentary is structure. Everyone watching knows the crew survives, which should kill the tension entirely, and the film generates enormous suspense anyway by focusing on process: the specific problem, the specific constraint, the specific people solving it under a clock.
It is also the best argument that competence is more dramatic than heroism. Nobody in this film does anything superhuman. They just do their jobs extremely well under conditions that do not allow a second attempt.
Watch it if: you want real spaceflight, real procedure, and a genuinely nail-biting 140 minutes.
Interstellar (2014)

Accuracy: mixed, but in an unusual way. Physicist Kip Thorne worked on the film and the black hole rendering was derived from actual general relativity equations, producing imagery so novel it resulted in published research. Time dilation near Gargantua is handled correctly. The wormhole is depicted as a sphere rather than a hole, which is right and which almost no film gets.
Then the third act happens and the film trades physics for metaphor. Whether that lands is the single biggest predictor of whether you love or resent this movie. What is not arguable is the middle hour, which contains the best sequence Nolan has ever directed: the docking scene, the wave planet, and the moment Cooper watches 23 years of messages in one sitting.
Hans Zimmer's organ score, recorded in a London church, does an enormous amount of the emotional work. At 169 minutes it demands a real evening.
Watch it if: you want scale and emotion and you can forgive a film for choosing feeling over rigor at the end.

The Martian (2015)

Accuracy: high, with one deliberate exception. Andy Weir's novel was researched obsessively and Ridley Scott kept most of it: the potato farming works, the water reclamation chemistry works, the orbital mechanics of the rescue work. Even the radioisotope thermoelectric generator used as a heat source is real hardware.
The exception is the opening storm that strands Watney. Mars has an atmosphere roughly one percent as dense as Earth's, so a 100 mph wind there would feel like a gentle breeze and could not knock over a rocket. Weir has said he knew and did it anyway because he needed a reason to leave someone behind.
The film's real achievement is tonal. It is a survival story that is genuinely funny, and it makes competence and arithmetic entertaining for 141 minutes. Matt Damon talking to a camera should not work this well.
Watch it if: you want the most purely enjoyable space film here, and you like watching smart people solve problems.
Alien (1979)

Accuracy: mixed, and mostly irrelevant. What Alien gets right is not physics but economics. The Nostromo is a commercial towing vehicle. Its crew are contractors arguing about bonus shares. Space here is not a frontier, it is a shift.
The details that do matter are handled well: the ship is grimy and industrial, hypersleep is used for long transits, and the exterior sequences respect vacuum silence. The creature biology is, obviously, invented from nothing.
It stays this high because it is a better film than most of the more accurate entries below it, and because that working-class texture influenced the genre more than any equation ever did.
Watch it if: you want space as a workplace and one of the great horror films as a bonus.
Gravity (2013)

Accuracy: low on mechanics, extraordinary on sensation. Astrophysicists have written entire essays about the film's orbital problems, and they are right. The ISS, Hubble, and a Chinese station cannot be visited in sequence with a jetpack, because they sit in wildly different orbital inclinations and the delta-v required is enormous. The debris cloud does not behave correctly.
And yet no film has ever conveyed the physical experience better. The way sound transmits through a suit but not through vacuum. The way rotation is impossible to stop without something to push against. The specific horror of a tether being your only relationship with a solid object. Cuaron and cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki built custom LED light boxes to make it work.
At 91 minutes it is the shortest film here and the most physically exhausting. Watch it as large and as loud as you can.
Watch it if: you want to feel what space would do to your body, and you can let the orbital math go.
Moon (2009)

Accuracy: high for a film made for around five million dollars. Duncan Jones shot on physical miniature sets with practical models, and the lunar surface work still reads better than plenty of far more expensive digital work.
The premise is one of the best in the genre and describing it spoils it, so: a man is nearing the end of a three-year solo contract at a helium-3 mining facility, with only a station AI for company. The AI is voiced by Kevin Spacey and the film uses your expectations about ship computers deliberately.
Sam Rockwell carries essentially the entire film alone, and the technical achievement of his performance becomes clear only once you understand what the film is doing. At 97 minutes it is beautifully economical.
Watch it if: you want small-scale, idea-driven space science fiction with a great central performance.
First Man (2018)

Accuracy: high, and unusually concerned with the parts other films skip. Damien Chazelle shot the flight sequences almost entirely from inside the capsule, in close-up, with handheld cameras and constant rattling. The Gemini 8 emergency, where a stuck thruster spun the capsule at roughly one revolution per second, is terrifying precisely because you only ever see what Armstrong saw.
It is also the least triumphant film ever made about the moon landing, and that is the point. Chazelle frames Apollo as a grinding, lethal, bureaucratically fraught program that killed a lot of people, and Armstrong as a man processing private grief through work.
The lunar landing itself is shot with the sound dropping almost entirely away, and it is the best sequence in the film.
Watch it if: you want spaceflight as it felt rather than as it was commemorated.
Six more, briefly
Contact is the best film ever made about the scientific method and the politics around it, with a genuinely great Jodie Foster performance. Sunshine has a magnificent first two acts and a third that turns into a slasher film, which remains one of the great unforced errors in the genre. The Right Stuff is 193 minutes and worth every one of them for the Mercury Seven story. Ad Astra has stunning imagery and the least accurate physics here, including a moon car chase. WALL-E has the single most romantic zero-gravity sequence ever animated. And Aliens trades its predecessor's dread for the best military science fiction ever filmed.

If you are watching more than one, order matters. The pairing that works best is a realism film followed by a spectacle film: Apollo 13 then Interstellar gives you the actual thing and then the dream of it, and the contrast makes both stronger. Moon then 2001 is the small-and-large version of the same idea.
Avoid stacking two long ones. Interstellar and 2001 back to back is 318 minutes of very deliberate pacing and almost nobody survives it in good spirits.
