Year-end lists are written in December, which is the worst possible moment to write them. Half the prestige releases have been out for a fortnight, the ratings are still inflated by opening-week enthusiasm, and nobody has any idea which films people will still be talking about.
So this is a 2025 list written in mid-2026. Every score below has had a full year to settle, which means it reflects a broad audience rather than the people who bought tickets on day one. Several films that dominated the conversation in December have quietly slid. A few that were overlooked have climbed.

The film of 2025 and the one whose standing has risen most in the year since. It is genuinely difficult to categorize, which is exactly why it works: a period piece, a musical, a horror film, and a story about the economics of Black art in the American South, all running simultaneously without any of them feeling bolted on.
What separates it from most ambitious genre films is that its ideas are load-bearing. The horror element is not a metaphor stapled onto a drama, it is the mechanism through which the film makes its argument, and the mid-film sequence everyone remembers is the moment those two halves fuse.
It sits at 7.5 from nearly 5,000 votes, which undersells it considerably. This is a case where the aggregate is measuring a film that alienated a chunk of its audience by refusing to be one thing, and the people it did not alienate rate it extremely highly.

The highest-rated film of 2025 with a substantial vote count, at 8.6, and one of the biggest box office performers worldwide. It is also the least accessible entry in this top five, because it is the culmination of a long-running series and assumes you have done the reading.
If you have, it is extraordinary. The animation work from Ufotable is the best in the medium: fluid, dense, and willing to spend enormous resources on a single fight sequence in a way that Western animation almost never does.
If you have not, this is not the place to start, and no amount of quality changes that. Begin at the beginning of the series or skip it.
Its performance is also a genuine industry story: anime features moved from a niche theatrical proposition to reliably outgrossing mid-budget studio films, and this is the clearest example yet.
Watch it if: you have followed the series. Otherwise, start elsewhere.
F1 (2025)

The best pure spectacle of 2025 and the strongest argument all year for a large screen. Joseph Kosinski applying the Top Gun: Maverick methodology to Formula One: real cars, real circuits, cameras mounted where cameras should not be, and as little digital work as the production could get away with.
The plot is a sports-film plot and it makes no attempt to hide that. A veteran returns, a rookie resents him, they learn from each other. Nobody is watching this for narrative surprise.
What they are watching for is the sensation of speed, and no racing film has ever delivered it this well. 7.8 from over 4,300 votes, which is a very healthy settled number for a genre that usually underperforms with critics and audiences alike.
Watch it if: you want to feel something physical, and you have a decent screen and speakers.
Predator: Badlands (2025)

The best entry in this franchise since 1987, and it got there by doing something nobody expected: telling the story from the Predator's side.
That single decision solves the structural problem that has undermined every sequel. A Predator film where humans are hunted has one trick and you know it in advance. A Predator film where the creature is the protagonist has to invent a culture, a set of rules, and a reason to care, and this one does all three.
7.8 from nearly 3,500 votes. Dan Trachtenberg has now made two genuinely good films in this series, which is two more than anyone else managed in thirty years.
The companion animated film, Predator: Killer of Killers, is also strong and sits at 7.8.
Watch it if: you wrote this franchise off, which was reasonable until recently.
How to Train Your Dragon (2025)

The live-action remake nobody wanted that turned out to be the rare one with a reason to exist. 7.9 from over 3,000 votes puts it well above the usual output of this particular studio strategy.
It works because the original was built on flight, and flight is one of the few things that genuinely gains from photographic texture and physical scale. The sequence where Hiccup and Toothless first fly properly is better here than in the animated film, which is not a sentence anyone expected to write.
It is also faithful to the thing that made the original good: a story about a boy who solves a war by refusing to fight it, in which the adults are wrong and eventually admit it.
Watch it if: you have a family audience and want something everyone will actually enjoy.
Six through twelve
Frankenstein (2025)

Guillermo del Toro finally making the film he has openly wanted to make his entire career. 7.6 from nearly 3,700 votes.
What distinguishes it from every previous adaptation is that it takes Mary Shelley's actual position seriously: the creature is articulate, the creature is right, and Victor is the monster of the title. Most versions make the creature a mute tragedy. This one lets him argue.
It is also, unsurprisingly, gorgeous. Del Toro has never made an ugly film and this is his most elaborate production design since Pan's Labyrinth.
Watch it if: you want the definitive screen version of a story everyone thinks they know.
KPop Demon Hunters (2025)

The surprise of 2025 and the most purely fun film on this list. A K-pop girl group who are secretly demon hunters, animated in a hyper-saturated style that borrows from music video, webtoon, and anime simultaneously.
8.0 from over 3,000 votes. What could have been a cynical property turned out to be sincere, extremely funny, and built on genuinely good songs, which is the part most films of this type get wrong.
It also became a cultural event in a way almost nothing animated does outside the major studios, largely on the strength of its soundtrack.
Watch it if: you want ninety-odd minutes of pure joy with an unreasonably good soundtrack.
Hamnet (2025)

The quietest film in this list and the most devastating. An adaptation of Maggie O'Farrell's novel about the death of Shakespeare's son and the marriage that had to survive it.
7.7 from around 1,500 votes. It is a small, patient, largely domestic film that spends its runtime on grief rather than on the famous man in the next room, and the choice to keep Shakespeare mostly off screen is what makes it work.
The final sequence connects the private loss to the play everyone knows, and it earns that connection completely rather than reaching for it.
Watch it if: you want the year's best drama and you are prepared to be wrecked by it.
Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025)

The third Avatar film, and by now the pattern is established: James Cameron delivers technical work that nothing else matches, wrapped around a story that is functional rather than surprising.
7.6 from over 4,000 votes and one of the biggest earners of the year. The underwater and fire imagery is genuinely without precedent, and the high frame rate work has finally stopped looking strange.
Whether that is enough depends entirely on what you want. As an argument for cinema as a physical experience it is unanswerable. As a story it is a competent revenge and family drama.
Watch it if: you want the most technically advanced images being made, and you can see it big.
The Gorge (2025)

The best genre surprise of early 2025. Two snipers stationed on opposite sides of a mysterious gorge, forbidden from contact, who start communicating anyway.
7.7 from over 4,000 votes. It begins as a two-hander romance conducted across a valley, and then it goes down into the gorge and becomes something else entirely. The genre shift roughly halfway is the whole appeal.
It is not a perfect film and the back half is less interesting than the front. It is still the most enjoyable thing on this list to watch cold.
Watch it if: you want a film that changes genre halfway and you go in knowing nothing.
Zootopia 2 (2025)

One of the biggest films of the year and considerably better than a nine-year-later animated sequel had any obligation to be. 7.7 from over 3,200 votes.
The original worked because its world had rules that produced jokes and a genuine argument at the same time. The sequel keeps that, widens the geography, and resists the usual sequel temptation to make the stakes global.
It is also very fast, which matters more in family animation than almost anything else.
Watch it if: you liked the first one, or you need something reliable for a mixed-age room.
Superman (2025)

The reset that mostly worked. 7.3 from over 5,200 votes, which is a solid but not spectacular settled number, and the disagreement about it is more interesting than the score.
Its central choice is to make Superman straightforwardly kind, in a period where superhero films had spent fifteen years making their protagonists reluctant, traumatised, or ironic. That earnestness is either the film's great strength or its limitation depending entirely on your tolerance for sincerity.
It is also aggressively full: a lot of characters, a lot of world, very little breathing room. The version of this film with twenty fewer minutes of setup would rate half a point higher.
Watch it if: you want superhero cinema that is not embarrassed to be hopeful.
Six more from a busy year
Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc sits at 8.5 and is the other major anime theatrical success of the year. Ne Zha 2 was the highest-grossing film of 2025 worldwide, driven almost entirely by the Chinese market, and is a genuinely spectacular piece of animation. Nuremberg is a sober, well-acted courtroom drama about the trials. Rental Family is a quiet gem about a man who is hired to stand in as other people's relatives. No Other Choice is Park Chan-wook, which is reason enough, and pairs well with our Korean cinema guide. And The Housemaid was a late-December thriller that has held its audience well.
The ones that did not hold up
A year of distance is unkind to some films. A Minecraft Movie was an enormous commercial success and sits at 6.2, the lowest settled score of any major 2025 release. Jurassic World Rebirth at 6.3 and Captain America: Brave New World at 6.0 tell a similar story: large audiences, limited affection.
That gap between commercial performance and rating is worth paying attention to when you are choosing what to watch. Box office measures how well a film was marketed. A settled score a year later measures whether people were glad they went.
